Returning the Wild: The Ecological Science Behind Britain's Farmland Restoration Movement

Stand at the edge of the Knepp Estate in West Sussex on a summer morning and the soundscape is unlike almost anywhere else in the lowland English countryside. Turtle doves — a species that has declined by more than ninety per cent in the UK since the 1970s — call from the scrub. Purple emperor butterflies drift through the oak canopy. Beneath the soil, fungal networks and invertebrate communities are quietly reconstituting themselves after decades of agricultural suppression. Knepp is, by now, one of the most cited examples of rewilding in Britain, but it is no longer exceptional. Across the country, from the Flow Country of Caithness to the Somerset Levels, landowners, conservationists, and ecologists are asking a radical question: what happens when you step back and allow nature to set the agenda?

Defining Rewilding: A Scientific Framework

The term 'rewilding' is used with varying degrees of precision in public discourse, encompassing everything from the reintroduction of apex predators to the simple cessation of mowing on roadside verges. Within the ecological literature, however, a more rigorous definition has emerged. Rewilding, in its contemporary scientific usage, refers to the restoration of self-regulating ecological processes — trophic interactions, natural disturbance regimes, and hydrological dynamics — with minimal ongoing human management once the initial conditions for recovery have been established.

Researchers at the University of Oxford's Department of Zoology and the Environmental Change Network have contributed substantially to the methodological frameworks used to assess rewilding outcomes. Key metrics include species richness and abundance indices, functional diversity measures that capture the breadth of ecological roles present in a recovering system, and soil carbon content as a proxy for below-ground ecosystem health. The application of these frameworks to British case studies is generating a body of evidence that is, in many respects, more encouraging than even proponents of rewilding had anticipated.

What the Evidence Shows

Long-term monitoring at restored sites consistently reveals rapid gains in invertebrate diversity following the removal of intensive management. Studies conducted at Knepp and at the RSPB's Hope Farm in Cambridgeshire have documented statistically significant increases in farmland bird populations within five to ten years of management change — a timescale that challenges the assumption that ecological recovery is necessarily a multigenerational process.

Carbon sequestration outcomes are more variable, and the science here remains genuinely contested. Peatland restoration in upland Britain — particularly in the Scottish Highlands and the North Pennines — offers some of the most compelling carbon storage potential of any land use change available to the UK. Degraded blanket bogs, which currently emit carbon dioxide and methane as a consequence of historic drainage and burning, can be converted into net carbon sinks within a decade of rewetting, according to studies published by researchers at the University of Exeter and the James Hutton Institute. Lowland woodland and scrub creation, by contrast, sequesters carbon more slowly and the permanence of that storage over century timescales is less certain.

Biodiversity outcomes in freshwater systems deserve particular attention. The reintroduction of Eurasian beavers (Castor fiber) to river catchments in Devon, Scotland, and most recently Oxfordshire has produced measurable downstream benefits: reduced flood peaks, increased channel complexity, and marked improvements in macroinvertebrate and fish assemblages. A five-year trial led by the University of Exeter found that beaver-modified streams supported significantly higher densities of brown trout and otter activity than adjacent unmodified reaches. These findings have materially shifted the policy conversation around beaver reintroduction, which now appears increasingly likely to be formally sanctioned across England.

The Food Security Tension

The ecological case for rewilding is increasingly robust. The political and economic case is considerably more complicated. Britain currently produces approximately sixty per cent of its food domestically, a proportion that the National Farmers' Union and successive governments have identified as a strategic priority to maintain or improve in the context of post-Brexit trade uncertainties and global supply chain vulnerabilities exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The land area required to achieve meaningful ecological restoration at a national scale is substantial. Some modelling exercises, including work published by researchers at the Tyndall Centre for Climate Research, suggest that meeting both the UK's nature recovery targets under the Environment Act 2021 and its net-zero commitments through land-based carbon sequestration could require the conversion of between ten and twenty per cent of current agricultural land. The implications for domestic food production would be non-trivial, particularly given that much of the land most suitable for rewilding — upland grazing pastures, marginal lowland arable — is also land that contributes relatively little to caloric output per hectare.

This tension is not irresolvable, but it requires careful spatial planning and honest engagement with trade-offs that public debate has not always managed. The Land Use Framework for England, published in 2023, represents an attempt by government to provide that spatial logic, designating different land categories for food production, nature recovery, and carbon sequestration. Researchers at Oxford's Environmental Change Institute have been involved in developing the evidence base for such frameworks, though they are candid about the limitations of current modelling tools when it comes to predicting ecological outcomes at the landscape scale.

Rural Economies and the Human Dimension

Rewilding's relationship with rural communities is frequently caricatured — portrayed either as the imposition of metropolitan environmental values on working landscapes, or as an unambiguous economic opportunity through nature-based tourism. The reality is considerably more nuanced. At Knepp, the transition from conventional mixed farming to rewilded estate has generated new revenue streams through ecotourism, safari experiences, and the sale of pasture-raised meat from the free-roaming cattle, pigs, and deer that serve as ecological proxies for the large herbivores that once shaped Britain's landscapes. The estate is, by most accounts, more financially resilient than it was under conventional management.

However, Knepp is a large privately owned estate with the capital and institutional capacity to manage a complex transition. The picture for tenant farmers, smallholders, and upland farming communities — many of whom are already operating on thin margins and depend on agricultural support payments — is considerably more fraught. The Environmental Land Management scheme, which replaced the EU's Basic Payment Scheme in England, offers payments for 'public goods' including biodiversity and carbon sequestration, and represents a genuine policy mechanism for incentivising land use change. Whether the payment rates on offer are sufficient to compensate farmers for the income foregone by reducing production intensity remains a subject of active debate.

A Landscape in Transition

Britain's ecological crisis — documented with increasing precision by the State of Nature reports published by a consortium of conservation organisations — is not a distant or abstract threat. It is measurable, ongoing, and in many respects accelerating. The rewilding movement, grounded in an increasingly mature body of ecological science, offers one of the most evidence-supported pathways to reversing it. The challenge facing policymakers, researchers, and landowners alike is to pursue that pathway with sufficient ambition whilst honestly confronting the genuine complexities of food security, rural economic resilience, and the governance of shared landscapes. The science, at least, is pointing in a clear direction.
